God Really IS Everywhere

Image
It's interesting that we often don't think about how God is truly omnipresent. He's not confined by geography, distance, or time. The last one in particular is striking, mostly because our inferior brains have a tough time comprehending it. God can be both in the past and in the future, as well as in our present circumstance. Think about that for minute. At this moment God is present in every second of time, from talking to Moses through the burning bush to one thousand years into the future. He's not surprised, confused, or uncertain about anything that occurs and can see every step, hear every word, and read every thought. When you stop and ponder it all you can't help but be impressed. It's humbling to think that we serve a God who can be both in the past and centuries into the future simultaneously. I don't claim to understand how it works and I am by no means going to attempt to explain it. The Lord really is everywhere...and what a great relie...

Second Listens: Coldplay's "X&Y"

Image
Another new section, you ask? Yes indeed! I was in a writing mood this afternoon and decided it was time for another music article, yet I was puzzled about what direction I wanted to take. I don't have a new album to review at the moment and no real opinions to bring up and bore people with. I need to choose which record to write about next for Underrated Record Club and I'm long overdue to catch up with the Great Debuts column. In the end I decided to be adventurous and do something new. This is a  new section will focus on revisiting older albums and seeing if my initial reaction has changed over time. Far too often we write off an album and make up our minds without really giving it time to marinate, resulting in missing out on great pieces of work that just take a bit more time and energy to truly appreciate. It's a lost art and one that, sadly, many listeners today simply don't have the patience to practice. I'm willing to admit when a record grows on me or...

The Punishment Dilemma: Two Years of Wilderness Wandering

Image
This blog really has one purpose: to give me an outlet to talk about things in my own way instead of bothering people face-to-face with them. That may sound strange and probably has you asking the question, "Why doesn't he just write in a private document and keep it there?". That's a fair point and one I have often considered pursuing. I guess there's a childish part of me that thinks maybe I have something worth saying or that I can make a difference, though I would never be so arrogant as to actually take that thought seriously. Perhaps the reason I put things out there is because I really need to. I need to find a way to articulate what's on my mind in a way that gets it off my chest without really having to talk to someone about it. Make sense? Yeah, I didn't think so. The sermon this Sunday sparked an old debate within me and over the past two years I have wrestled with a weight that cuts so deeply that I'm also hesitant to mention it at al...

Active Galactic Nucleus

Image
Just as an atom or cell has a nucleus, it appears that galaxies have their own version of the same thing. The active galactic nucleus (AGN for short) is a compact region in the center of a given galaxy that has a higher than average luminosity over some or all of the electromagnetic spectrum. There are a lot of other factors that go into it and it gets confusing. Needless to say, I won't be going too far into depth about these because I'm still learning a lot about them myself. It's always a wonderful treat to learn something new about the universe that God has created and AGN is just another way that we get a glimpse into how our galaxy functions and how it's all crafted to unique precision. AGN can be divided into two main classes: radio-loud and radio-queit (wouldn't that be a GREAT name for a double album?). There's a lot that goes into the description but apparently there is always more to a galaxy than meets the eye. So there you go. AGN is aweso...

Spiritual Pain Can Be a Good Thing

Image
I've always been somewhat fascinated with why so many people are opposed to the gospel of Christianity. This is a question that could have dozens of answers, ranging from something like, "I don't believe in God" to "Christians are annoying" or even the classic "They're just a bunch of fundamentalists" (how many of you even know what that is?). I don't normally look at people as if they were test subjects or something to be analyzed. Every individual is unique and I'm not about to start seeing them as guinea pigs, yet the question is an interesting one: why don't you accept Christianity? It wasn't until I turned the microscope upon myself that I realized a likely factor among those who don't share my faith: it hurts. Now let's be clear about something: we Christians have not always represented God in the kindest or smartest of ways. Bombing abortion clinics isn't condoned anywhere in the scriptures and even the ...
