Space Fact of the Week

Image
Poor Pluto. It's been demoted to a dwarf planet and seems to be relatively forgotten by a lot of astronomers and space lovers. That doesn't mean it isn't an interesting planet to take a look at. Pluto has five known moons: Charon, Hydra, Nix, Kerberos and Styx. Come sail away…with random space facts.

Album Review: American Beauty EP

Image
If you weren't lucky (or motivated enough) to spend April 19 scouring a local record store for this limited EP then thankfully it's available for download, a nice touch for fans and a bargain for some pretty fun Bruce recordings that were left off of High Hopes . "American Beauty" is the kind of rough-and-tumble rock that Springsteen does so well, a thundering slice of power pop that finds him singing in a unique range with plenty of energy. "Mary Mary" is quite infectious with its gentle strings and infectious groove. For those that love Bruce's folk work (as I do) then this will definitely keep you coming back time and time again. "Hurry Up Sundown" is another raucous rock piece that wouldn't have sounded out of place on The Rising or Magic . "Hey Blue Eyes" is a darker and more political song that I don't find to be all that memorable but I can't deny that it's well done. Nothing is a surprise or revolutionary...

Great Debuts: Hot Fuss

Image
It's hard to believe that The Killers delivered their stunning debut a decade ago. The band has gone on to great success and has continued to improve, shaking up their sound with each consecutive release. When it comes to debuts it's hard to imagine a better one and a great taste of what was to follow. The first half of Hot Fuss is what many are familiar with. The bombastic opener "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine", the uptempo (and lyrically bizarre) "Somebody Told Me", the popular "Smile Like You Mean It", and the live favorite "All These Things That I've Done", complete with the concert-ready bridge of " I've got soul but I'm not a soldier ." And then there's "Mr. Brightside", which still ranks as of the best and most aggressive rockers of the past decade. It's never lost its energy and I can still count on this tune to give me a kick in the pants when I need a shot of energy. When put together th...

Blood Moon Tomorrow!

Image
You're probably aware of it by now but there's a blood moon tomorrow and many Christians around the world are in a state of curiosity and discussion about what it may mean.   A blood moon is caused when the moon passes within the earth's shadow, giving it a red glow. There are two this years and two planned for next year; history shows that blood moons have coincided with significant events in the history of Israel, leading many eschatologists and believers all over the world to debate about whether this is truly a sign from God or just a coincidence and interesting lunar event.   I personally don't have an opinion one way or another. There is considerable evidence that this could indeed mark another series of historic events for Israel and the world as a whole, or it could be another cosmic event that passes uneventfully. I don't believe there's any harm in keeping watch but we must always be careful not to set dates ...

Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about this blog. Things have just been busy lately but rest assured these posts will continue. And people can continue to not read them!

Space Fact of the Week

Image
No time for April Fool's shenanigans around here! Since it's getting warmer outside (especially if you live here in Texas) now's as good a time as any to focus on the sun. Okay, scratch that: think about the sun. You probably shouldn't look directly at it. Ever. Our sun actually has a strong magnetic field. During magnetic storms magnetic energy is released, creating solar flares. These appear as sunspots to us, where magnetic lines are twisted and spin like a tornado. I guess it's like some sort of galactic acne or something. So there you have it. The sun has spots...but you still shouldn't look at it. Ever.
